Calico Discus 2 inch

Product Description

The calico discus is one of the most unusual cultivated discus, and its cross breeding results in a variety of shades. Most calico discus appear as a combination of the red and white discus it is bred from. This sometimes results in an overall pink shade, but that can vary. Some calico discus appear white with faint red spotting that occurs mostly in the center of its body. Others come out with a truly patched appearance, where the overall body is white with assorted pinkish to red patches throughout. Some calico discus show patches that are more golden in color than red. The dorsal and pectoral fins have a light, almost pearl colored series of striations. The calico discus has been bred to eliminate the vertical bars that naturally occurring discus possess. Although the fry that result from the breeding of two calico discus may appear very similar in their pale, slightly pinkish hue, as they mature their individual colors and patterns will appear.

Discus are one of the larger varieties of tropical aquarium fish, and their bodies are very round and flat. Their full dorsal and pectoral fins reach back almost to their tail fins, and this contributes to the round shape of the discus. At maturity, the calico discus will be approximately 8”, and its height will almost match its length. The calico discus is among the most unusual discus, and it makes a great addition to an aquarium. It is also interesting to watch a juvenile calico discus mature and color, as you can never quite be sure what its mature appearance will be.
